Rubio Introduces Bills to Fight Medicare Fraud
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) introduced two bills to address Medicare fraud.
Punishing Medicare Fraudsters Act. The current penalties are relatively low for criminals who commit health care fraud despite the significant impact this crime has on older, sick, and disabled Americans. This legislation would increase the financial penalties and lengthen prison sentences for committing health care fraud.
Medicare Organization Report Enhancing (MORE) Summaries Act. This legislation would develop a system to test how to provide more consistent Medicare Summary Notices to patients, thus increasing the likelihood of fraud detection. The bill aims to help Medicare users quickly identify fraud, and create a transparent process for them to receive and understand their Medicare Summary Notices.
- “The Medicare system protects some of our most vulnerable populations. By increasing reporting to more quickly detect fraud and raising penalties for those committing fraud, we can make significant strides toward addressing this growing problem and protecting Americans.” – Senator Rubio
Flashback… Senator Rubio recently introduced a bill to require consistent evaluations of HHS cybersecurity systems following reports that 133 million people had their health data, including Medicare beneficiary data, compromised.
