Rubio: Ensure Transparency for Performance at State Department

Mar 20, 2024 | Press Releases

The U.S. State Department issues Performance Improvement Plans (PIP) to staff who are not meeting job expectations, and can be used as a first step in employment termination. Currently, those PIP’s are not provided to review panels when the State Department considers tenure or promotions.

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) introduced the Mandatory Review of Performance Improvement Plans at State to require those PIPs issued in the past five years to be provided to panels ahead of tenure or promotions.

  • “The State Department is a critical component of our federal government which defends U.S. interests abroad. As such, the department must have a transparent and efficient system for performance reviews where employees who are capable and well suited for tenure and promotions receive such recognition.” – Senator Rubio
