Rubio Introduces Bills Countering Communist China’s Influence

Jul 31, 2024 | Press Releases

Communist China has rapidly expanded its aggressive campaign to undermine U.S. and partner interests while oppressing individuals for their faiths. Meanwhile, bodies within the United Nations have advocated against U.S. efforts to stem these activities.

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) introduced three bills to counter Communist China’s growing threat, both at home and abroad.

  • “Communist China has been able to get away with a campaign of widespread evil. From committing acts of genocide against religious and ethnic groups, to spearheading forced sterilization and abortions, as well as dominating crucial minerals and technologies, and impeding the sovereignty of several regional partners, the U.S. will not tolerate these practices.” – Senator Rubio

Falun Gong Protection Act. This legislation would require sanctions on those responsible for, or complicit in, the involuntary harvesting of organs, especially those targeting Falun Gong practitioners, as well as require a report from the Secretary of State on China’s organ transplant policies and practices. Senators Ron Johnson (R-WI), Roger Marshall (R-KS), and Thom Tillis (R-NC) are cosponsors. U.S. Representative Scott Perry (R-PA) introduced companion legislation in the House.

STOP CCP Act. This legislation would require sanctions on members of the Chinese Communist Party, as well as their adult family members, who are involved in acts of aggression, oppression, and human rights abuses. This includes blocking property transactions as well as denying visas and entry into the United States. U.S. Representatives Lisa McClain (R-MI), Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), Vern Buchanan (R-FL), and Chris Pappas (D-NH) introduced companion legislation in the House.

UN Special Rapporteur funding prohibition. This legislation would prohibit taxpayer funding to the “Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights” position within the United Nations. The current role has been used to advocate for the suspension of sanctions against China, in spite of those sanctions being levied for human rights violations.
