53 Senators Co-Sponsor Rubio VA Reform Bill

Jun 4, 2014 | Press Releases

Growing support now includes majority of U.S. Senate

Washington, D.C. A majority of U.S. Senators, including 11 Democrats, are now co-sponsoring U.S. Senator Marco Rubio’s legislation to reform the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The legislation, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives last month with the support of 162 Democrats, would give the VA secretary the authority to fire or demote VA Senior Executive Service (SES) or equivalent employees based on performance.

“The only thing keeping these important reforms from being signed into law is Senator Reid’s refusal to schedule a vote,” Senator Rubio said. “In order to give veterans the care they deserve, the new VA secretary will need to fire employees who wrongly participated in this scandal. This legislation gives the secretary that power, which is why a majority of the Senate is co-sponsoring it. It makes no sense why Senator Reid would not allow a vote.”

The bill is currently co-sponsored by 11 Senate Democrats: Senators Bill Nelson (D-FL), Mark Warner (D-VA), Mark Pryor (D-AR), Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Kay Hagan (D-NC), Al Franken (D-MN), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), John Walsh (D-MT) and Joe Manchin (D-WV). Among Republicans, Senators Roy Blunt (R-MO),  Dan Coats (R-IN), Bob Corker (R-TN), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Mark Kirk (R-IL), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Thad Cochran (R-MS) joined as co-sponsors today.

The legislation is also supported by Concerned Veterans for America, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, Fleet Reserve Association, The American Legion, and American Veterans.
