Rubio Statement on Fishery Assistance From CARES Act
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued the following statement after the U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross announced $23.6 million in fisheries assistance funding provided by Sec. 12005 of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to Florida fisheries negatively affected by COVID-19.
“Florida’s fishing and seafood industries are critically important to our economy, and they have been hit especially hard during the coronavirus pandemic,” Rubio said. “I am pleased these funds will be available to a wide variety of stakeholders, including commercial fishing, charter fishing, aquaculture, and seafood processors. I understand that Floridians in these sectors continue to feel the economic brunt of the pandemic, and I will continue to work with my colleagues in the Senate and in the Administration to advocate for Florida’s fishing industry.”
Last month, Senators Rubio and Rick Scott (R-FL) led a bipartisan delegation letter urging Commerce to expedite guidance for the disbursement of the $300 million in funds made available by the CARES Act for fishery related businesses and to coordinate with the Secretary of Agriculture to expand commodity purchases of seafood for nutrition assistance programs.
