Rubio Statement on Kendall Parkway Project Vote
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released the following statement after the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners voted to proceed to the design phase of the Kendall Parkway Project:
“Today’s vote to proceed to the design phase of the Kendall Parkway, with new protections for the Everglades, is just another step in a long process. I thank Mayor Gimenez and Chairman Bovo for their efforts to address my concerns regarding impacts to Everglades restoration in explicit and transparent terms. However, as this process moves forward, I will be closely engaged to ensure that the commitments made today are executed in good faith and for the benefit of the Everglades. I want to make it abundantly clear, having MDX buy only the amount of land needed for permits will not suffice. I will do everything in my power to get federal agencies to reject this project if MDX fails to both purchase all of the property needed for Everglades Restoration in the project area and swap them with the current federal lands in the Bird Drive Basin they need for the roadway.”
On Wednesday, Rubio urged Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez to demonstrate a clear commitment to protecting Everglades restoration ahead of the vote on the Comprehensive Development Master Plan (CDMP). He also released a video outlining his conditions for supporting the project.
