Rubio Praises New Sanctions Targeting Maduro Officials for Corruption & Venezuela’s Electricity Crisis
Washington, DC — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued a statement after the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions against two Maduro cronies engaged in significant corruption and fraud harming the Venezuelan people. Imposed pursuant to Executive Order 13692, the new sanctions target Luis Alfredo Motta Dominguez, who previously served as Maduro’s Minister of Electric Power and President of the National Electric Corporation (CORPOELEC), and Eustiquio Jose Lugo Gomez, the Deputy Minister of Finance, Investments, and Strategic Alliances in the illegitimate regime’s Ministry of Electric Power. The U.S. Department of Justice today also indicted Motta and Lugo for “their alleged roles in laundering the proceeds of violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) in connection with their alleged receipt of bribes to award Corpoelec business to U.S.-based companies.”
“The Trump Administration’s new sanctions target corrupt and criminal Maduro thugs who are directly responsible for the ongoing countrywide electrical blackouts that are harming the Venezuelan people and their access to basic goods, potable water, healthcare, and social services,” Rubio said. “I also want to recognize the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida and the Justice Department’s Criminal Division for their hard work to build the case for holding accountable these Maduro thugs and indicting them on seven counts of money laundering and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.”
Rubio is the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues.
