Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s issues, issued the following statement today regarding the Haitian government’s announcement that the presidential runoff election, originally scheduled for December 27th 2015, has been rescheduled for January 24, 2016:
“I welcome the announcement of the commission investigating Haiti’s recent presidential election that Haiti’s presidential runoff can go forward on January 24th. This announcement lifts the cloud of political uncertainty a little bit, but now the United States must remain committed to helping Haiti conduct a free, fair and transparent election that allows the new president to be sworn in by February 7th as mandated by their constitution.
“The irregularities reported by the commission should be addressed and acted upon by the Haitian Government and electoral authorities, but it is important that the Haitian people know that there will be a clear end to this process that results in a democratically elected president assuming office as part of a peaceful, on-time transfer of power.
“As I have said many times, a democratic, prosperous, and stable Haiti is in the best interest of the United States. We will continue to assist the Haitian people as they seek to have their voices represented in the selection of their next government.”
