English/ Español: Rubio Expresses Concern Following Bolivia’s First Round of Elections
RUBIO EXPRESSES CONCERN FOLLOWING BOLIVIA’S FIRST ROUND OF ELECTIONS
Miami, FL — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today issued the following statement after serious irregularities in Bolivia’s electoral process occurred this past weekend. Earlier this week, Rubio published a video expressing his concern about the ongoing situation in Bolivia.
“Evo Morales is illegitimately holding on to power in Bolivia. What we saw this past weekend should raise serious concerns about Bolivia’s democratic future, following the unprecedented suspension of the Transmission of Preliminary Election Results (TREP) for nearly 24 hours. As stated by the Organization of American States’ (OAS) electoral observation mission, the best option for Bolivia is to conduct a second round. Democracies in the region should voice their concerns as the democratic future of our hemisphere is at stake.”
Rubio is the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues.
