Rubio Meets With Martin County Commissioner To Discuss Florida’s Algae Crisis
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio today met with Martin County Commissioner Doug Smith to discuss Florida’s algae bloom crisis. They were also joined by Assistant County Administrator Roger Baltz.
“I enjoyed visiting with Commissioner Smith, although I wish it were under different circumstances than the ones confronting Florida’s Treasure Coast today,” said Rubio. “We discussed many things the federal government needs to be doing in order to help the local communities impacted by the algae bloom. While we’re making progress on some things like slowing the Army Corps’ discharges and making Small Business Administration relief available, we agreed President Obama has taken too long to respond to Governor Scott’s request for a federal disaster declaration. I urge President Obama to deal with the algae problem and to grant the federal disaster request immediately.
“It’s also critically urgent that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service get off the backs of the South Florida Water Management District,” added Rubio. “It makes no sense for federal regulators to put the protection of 10 bird nests of a species on the rise ahead of the needs of millions of Treasure Coast residents. What the federal government is asking the local water district to do will only lead to more harmful water discharges from Lake Okeechobee. The federal government should rescind its ‘recommendation’ and stop threatening litigation against the local water district.”
