Rubio Applauds DOT Grants for Port Miami and Port Canaveral
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) applauded the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for awarding a $43.9 million Port Infrastructure Development Grant to PortMiami and a $14.1 million Port Infrastructure Development Grant to Port Canaveral. The funding will allow these two Florida ports to modernize their burgeoning operations. Rubio spoke with DOT Secretary Elaine Chao this morning on the announcement of the two grants.
“I applaud the administration for its continued commitment and investment to Florida’s critical infrastructure,” Rubio said. “PortMiami is not just the busiest cruise port in the world, it is our nation’s gateway to Latin America and is critical for South Florida’s economy. Similarly, Port Canaveral is the world’s second busiest cruise port in multi-day embarkations. These two grants will ensure that Florida’s ports continue to be world-class and a driver of our state’s economy.”
“Our ports are an integral component of our Nation’s economic success,” Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao said. “As the Administration continues to invest in America’s infrastructure, this program will further modernize and improve the efficiency of our waterways.”
With their grant, PortMiami will be able to utilize port resources more efficiently and expedite the processing of agricultural products. With their grant, Port Canaveral will be able to demolish an obsolete pier, dredge channels, construct an 880-foot long wharf, and address infrastructure needs around the port.
