Senator Marco Rubio: “I think for those of us who believe that to be engaged actively is important, one of the fundamental arguments I always make is that: for nations like ours, foreign policy is domestic policy — especially in a global economy. And I think our alliance, the partnership between the U.S. and the U.K., is perhaps the most productive and most important alliance in the world.”
Sky News’ Adam Boulton: “Why is that? Because, you know, as you said, we’ve got other partners. We’re in with Europe. You’re supposedly tilting toward Asia. Why is that?”
Rubio: “I think it’s that the two most effective and most powerful voices who support liberty, democracy, freedom, freedom of expression, freedom of speech, free enterprise, and a free enterprise economy. These are important principles that we share, and since the end of World War II, have had extraordinary success in defending and, quite frankly, spreading around the world.”
Boulton: “And what about as a conservative? You’ve been here, you’ve met people like Michael Gove, George Osborne, Philip Hammond, other foreign officers. How important do you see that relationship between the Conservative Party and the Republican Party?”
Rubio: “Well it’s interesting. As I’ve been here and travelled, what’s most struck me is how similar some of your domestic debates are with ours. Including the effort by conservatives to figure out how we can apply our principles to the modern era, the 21st century. We’re having the same debate in the U.S. In the U.S., I can tell you that the nature of our challenge is that there are many people in our country who are trying to make it and trying to get ahead, and feel like the Republican Party doesn’t stand for, or speak for, people like them. And we have to change that perception because it’s not accurate.”
