Rubio Leads Florida Lawmakers in Urging POTUS to Declare Pre-landfall Emergency Declaration Ahead of Hurricane Sally
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) led a bipartisan group of Florida lawmakers in a letter to President Trump in support of Governor Ron DeSantis’ request to declare a pre-landfall emergency declaration in expectation of Hurricane Sally. Joining Rubio were Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) and Representatives Neal Dunn (R-FL), Al Lawson (D-FL), and Matt Gaetz (R-FL).
“Florida has experienced several major storms in recent years, including Hurricanes Michael, Irma, Hermine, and Matthew,” the lawmakers wrote. “Floridians continue to rebuild from previous storms while also facing the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. With Hurricane Sally bringing potentially devastating levels of rainfall and storm surge, as well as strong winds, federal resources will be critical in assisting Floridians. As such, we urge you to approve the State of Florida’s request for a pre-landfall emergency declaration that will provide the assistance necessary to ensure the safety of Floridians.”
The full text of the letter is below.
Dear Mr. President:
We write in support of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ request for a pre-landfall emergency declaration in expectation of Hurricane Sally. The current forecast predicts the storm will impact communities in Northwest Florida. We request you promptly approve Florida’s request to guarantee the distribution of necessary federal resources to the counties of Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Liberty, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Walton and Washington.
Florida has experienced several major storms in recent years, including Hurricanes Michael, Irma, Hermine, and Matthew. With Hurricane Sally bringing potentially devastating levels of rainfall and storm surge, as well as strong winds, federal resources will be critical in assisting Floridians. As such, we urge you to approve the State of Florida’s request for a pre-landfall emergency declaration that will provide the assistance necessary to ensure the safety of Floridians.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this important matter. We look forward to working with your administration to ensure Florida has the resources necessary to respond in the aftermath of this potentially devastating hurricane.
Sincerely,
