Ahead of Hurricane Isaias, Rubio, Scott Urge President Trump to Approve Florida’s Emergency Declaration
Miami, FL — U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Rick Scott (R-FL) urged President Donald Trump to approve Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ request for a pre-landfall emergency declaration ahead of Hurricane Isaias’ potential damaging effects to the peninsula.
The full text of the senators’ letter is below.
Dear Mr. President:
We write in support of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ request for a pre-landfall emergency declaration in expectation of Hurricane Isaias. The current forecast predicts the storm will impact Florida communities. We request you promptly approve Florida’s request to guarantee the distribution of necessary federal resources.
In recent years, Florida has experienced major storms, including Hurricanes Michael, Irma, Hermine, and Matthew. Floridians currently face a unique challenge as they deal with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic while continuing to recover and rebuild their lives from the effects of these previous natural disasters. Federal resources are critical to ensuring an effective response to Hurricane Isaias. Preparation has proven to be essential in protecting property and the public health and safety of potential victims of a major storm. As such, we urge you to approve the State of Florida’s request for a pre-landfall emergency declaration that will provide the assistance necessary to ensure the safety of Floridians.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this important matter. We look forward to working with your administration to ensure Florida has the resources necessary to respond in the aftermath of this potentially devastating hurricane.
Sincerely,
