Rubio Welcomes USDA Inclusion of Florida Spiny Lobster in Seafood Relief Program
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) welcomed U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue’s announcement that Florida’s spiny lobster would be eligible for benefits through the seafood relief program. The relief program, originally announced by President Trump on June 24, 2020, seeks to address harm to the United States seafood industry caused by steep tariffs imposed by foreign governments, including China.
In July, Rubio led members of the Florida congressional delegation in a letter to Secretary Perdue urging the department to include spiny lobster in the program.
“It is welcome news that the Administration has included spiny lobster and other seafood in the relief program,” Rubio said. “This program will help to alleviate Florida’s spiny lobster fishery, which has been severely impacted by China’s belligerent economic behavior. I will continue working with the Administration to strengthen Florida’s fishing industry and to ensure that the effects of Chinese tariffs do not ripple across the state’s economy.”
