ICYMI: Senator Rubio Got the Interim Government of Venezuela Invited to the U.S. Summit for Democracy
Miami Diario: Interim Government of Venezuela will participate in the U.S. Summit for Democracy
November 22, 2021

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio managed to get Venezuela included on President Joe Biden’s guest list at the Leaders for Democracy Summit.
Rubio issued a strong wake-up-call to a Senior State Department official.
It’s worth noting that just a week ago, the government of Juan Guaidó was not on the guest list of this important virtual meeting, which will be held on December 9th and 10th of this year.

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio spoke during a Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee hearing with Kevin O’Reilly, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, who acknowledged that the official policy of the United States remains the same, that the U.S. recognizes the legitimate government in Venezuela, represented by interim president Juan Guaidó.
Following this statement by O’Reilly, Rubio said that he did not understand why Guaidó’s government had not been included on the list of invitees to the Virtual Summit for Democracy.
“If the U.S. policy is that the Interim Government of President Guaidó is a legitimate government and we are trying to strengthen both the leverage and credibility of the pro-democracy movement in Venezuela, not inviting them even in an initial list to a Summit of Democracies is certainly not helpful to that.”
From December 9-10, 2021, President Biden will host a virtual summit for government leaders, civil society leaders, and private sector leaders.
The summit will focus on the challenges and opportunities facing democracies and provide a platform for leaders to make both individual and collective commitments to uphold democracy and human rights both at home and abroad.
