MEDIA ADVISORY: Rubio To Chair Hearing On Drug And Migrant Interdictions Next Wednesday
U.S. Coast Guard Commandant, Admiral Paul Zukunft, to testify
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard, will convene a hearing titled, “Assessing the Coast Guard’s Increasing Duties: A Focus on Drug and Migrant Interdiction,” on Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. The hearing takes place as the Coast Guard has seen a steady increase in Cuban migrants attempting to make the dangerous journey across the Florida Straits.
Rubio has been a key leader in fighting to sever the chain of illicit activities, such as drug trafficking and human smuggling, and improve the effectiveness of the Coast Guard’s interdiction efforts. In February, the President signed into law the “Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2015,” a bipartisan effort led by Senators Rubio, John Thune (R-SD), Bill Nelson (D-FL), and Cory Booker (D-NJ). In April, Rubio visited the Coast Guard in Miami where he met with officials to discuss their mission and goals.
The Commandant of the Coast Guard, Admiral Paul Zukunft, will testify on the Coast Guard’s statutory missions including the current interdiction efforts that often intersect with organized transnational smugglers. Combatting transnational criminal networks and enforcing U.S. maritime border security are two of the Coast Guard’s top priorities over the next decade.
