Rubio Asks Six Federal Agencies to Take Specific Steps to Aid Victims of Hurricane Irma

Sep 8, 2017 | Press Releases

Miami, FL – Ahead of Hurricane Irma making landfall in Florida, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today separately urged six department and agency heads to take specific actions intended to aid Floridians and others impacted by the storm:

Rubio urged the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to streamline reimbursements for disaster recovery and prioritize debris removal from roads needed by emergency services to help prevent residents from being cut off from assistance.

Rubio asked the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to make it easier for hurricane victims to access funds in retirement accounts without barriers and workers to donate to relief charities.

Rubio requested the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) help lead efforts to investigate and prosecute illegal activity in the aftermath of the storm, especially looting and scams.

Rubio asked the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to prepare for an increase in the mosquito population following the storm, which could contribute to the spread of viruses, such as Zika, and ensuring coordination is taking place to help hospitals with vulnerable patients.

Rubio urged the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to help maintain and protect the supply of gasoline and natural gas in Florida, and safeguard nuclear power plants.

Rubio requested the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) authorize increased outreach efforts and benefits assistance for veterans in Florida.

Rubio also urged President Trump to approve Chairman Marcellus W. Osceola, Jr.’s request for an emergency declaration for the Seminole Tribe of Florida in anticipation of Hurricane Irma.
