Rubio, DOT Secretary Chao Discuss Florida Brightline Train Accidents

Feb 7, 2018 | Press Releases

Washington, D.C.— U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today joined U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Elaine Chao and Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) to discuss the recent fatal accidents involving Florida’s Brightline train. Last month, Rubio urged Chao “to work with Brightline, the Florida Department of Transportation, local governments and the surrounding communities to implement appropriate safety measures and confirm proper infrastructure is in place to avoid future fatal accidents.”

Following the call, Rubio released this statement:

“I had a productive call today with Secretary Chao and Senator Nelson on the recent Brightline train accidents. I urged Secretary Chao to partner with the state of Florida and local government officials to ensure public safety remains the highest priority for this new high-speed operation. In addition to enhanced physical safety measures, it is vital that DOT coordinate with the state on public education initiatives. Secretary Chao assured me that her department has prioritized this issue and will be actively working with Florida stakeholders to prevent future accidents.”
