Rubio Statement on Countering Iran’s Malign Activities in the Middle East
Washington, D.C.— U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued today a statement after U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley announced the declassification of significant information and materials related to Iran’s growing support of militancy in the Middle East:
“I commend the Administration for declassifying information and materials related to Iran’s malign activities today. As the United States weighs the future of the flawed Iran nuclear deal, the U.S. and our allies must do more to stop the Iranian terror-sponsoring regime’s growing support for Houthi rebels in Yemen and other militant groups in the Middle East.
“Under the flawed Iran nuclear deal, the president is continuing to waive America’s most powerful economic and financial sanctions. Congress enacted these sanctions to confront not only the Iranian regime’s nuclear threat, but also its dangerous support for missile proliferation, international terrorism, regional militancy, and egregious human rights abuses. As the next deadline for waiving sanctions approaches in January 2018, I urge the president to consider whether it is truly in America’s national security interest to keep our most powerful non-military tools off the table and to continue suspending the Iran sanctions measures that have a proven track-record of changing the Iranian regime’s behavior.”
