On Anniversary Of Borinqueneers Bill Signing, Rubio Again Urges Obama To Expedite Congressional Gold Medal
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued the following statement today marking the one year anniversary of President Obama signing a bill to award the 65th Infantry Regiment “Borinqueneers” with the Congressional Gold Medal, an honor that still has not been bestowed on these veterans:
“A year ago, I was proud to play a role in making a long overdue tribute to the 65th Infantry Regiment Borinqueneers become reality. The Borinqueneers’ service in World War I, World War II and the Korean War deserves to be recognized. Unfortunately, the awarding of the Borinqueneers’ Congressional Gold Medals has gotten bogged down in a bureaucratic logjam, even as several of them have died without ever having received this tribute they earned during their lifetimes.
“On this anniversary of the bill’s signing, we remember that time is truly of the essence. I am urging the President to do everything he can to make sure the remaining Borinqueneers living today receive their Congressional Gold Medals as soon as possible.”
Last year Rubio, who originally co-sponsored the Senate version of the bill, was on hand at the White House for the signing. A few months later, Rubio honored the Borinqueneers at a ceremony in Orlando.
In February, March, and April of this year, Rubio urged President Obama to expedite the awarding of the Congressional Gold Medal following the deaths of several Borinqueneers, including six with ties to Florida.
