Rubio To Chair Hearing On Hurricane Forecasting Next Wednesday
Miami’s Dr. Rick Knabb, Director of the National Hurricane Center, to testify
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), chairman of the Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard, will convene a subcommittee hearing titled “Improvements in Hurricane Forecasting and the Path Forward” on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. The hearing takes place one week prior to the official start of the 2016 hurricane season.
Earlier this month, Rubio met with officials at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida, to underscore the importance of being prepared for the upcoming hurricane season and to discuss improvements in the tracking and forecasting of storms, as well as storm surges. This week, Rubio wrote an op-ed in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that highlights the importance of passing the “Hurricane Forecast Improvement Act of 2015,” legislation he introduced in 2015 that would improve guidance for hurricane track, intensity, and storm surge forecasts.
Hurricane forecasting has improved substantially in the past century, largely due to weather satellites and computer models. The subcommittee hearing will examine these advancements as the director of the National Hurricane Center (NHC) will testify on efforts to improve hurricane path forecasts and the ability to predict a hurricane’s intensity.
