Rubio Statement On Canada’s Arrest of Huawei Executive
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released the following statement following the Canadian government’s arrest of Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei:
“The arrest of Huawei’s CFO by the Canadian government for potential violations of Iran sanctions is welcome and I urge prompt extradition to the U.S. Huawei has direct ties to the Chinese government and Communist Party, has long posed a serious risk to US national security, and I continue to strongly urge Canada to reconsider Huawei’s inclusion in any aspect of its 5G development, introduction, and maintenance.”
Rubio Actions on Huawei:
- On Febuary 7, 2018, Senators Rubio and Cotton introduced the Defending U.S. Government Communications Act, legislation that would prohibit the United States government from purchasing or leasing telecommunications equipment and/or services from Huawei, ZTE, or any subsidiaries or affiliates.
- On May 2, 2018, Rubio applauded the Department of Defense’s decision to block all stores on U.S. military installations from selling phones and telecommunications devices made by Chinese firms, Huawei and ZTE.
- On May 10, 2018, Rubio introduced the Fair Trade with China Enforcement Act, legislation that would safeguard American assets from Chinese influence and possession, and serve to blunt China’s tools of economic aggression.
- On June 7, 2018, Senators Rubio, Cotton, Van Hollen, and Schumer introduced an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act to respond to the national-security threat posed by Chinese telecom companies like Huawei and ZTE.
- On June 20, 2018, Senators Rubio and Cotton were joined by Representatives Conway, Cheney, and Ruppersberger in sending a letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai expressing concerns about Google’s relationship with the Chinese telecom company Huawei due to its threat to U.S. national security. Specifically, they urged Google to reconsider their “strategic partnership” with Huawei, which has direct links to the Chinese Communist Party.
- On June 20, 2018, Rubio and Congressman Jim Banks raised several concerns with Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos on Chinese state-directed Huawei Technologies’ partnerships with U.S. universities that may pose a significant threat to national security.
- On October 12, 2018, Rubio and Senator Warner urged Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reconsider Huawei’s inclusion in any aspect of Canada’s 5G development, introduction, and maintenance.
