Rubio: President Obama’s Reckless Release of Terrorists from GITMO Endangers More Americans
Miami, FL – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations and Intelligence committees, issued the following statement regarding the Obama Administration’s unilateral release of 15 terrorists from the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to the United Arab Emirates:
“President Obama continues to put politics and his legacy above U.S. national security with this extremely reckless and deeply misguided policy. Over and over again we’ve seen radical Islamic terrorists released from Guantanamo violate the terms of their transfer and return to plotting attacks against America and our allies. Prudence and common sense continue to be thrown out the window simply to fulfill the President’s naïve, eight year old campaign promise.
“The fact that most of these 15 detainees were not unanimously approved for release by Obama Administration officials raises serious concerns. The Administration must share with Congress any written agreement between the U.S. and U.A.E. on monitoring these terrorists.
“Some countries that pledged to monitor terrorists that were previously released have demonstrated they are unable or unwilling to do so. Just recently, a detainee transferred to Uruguay escaped and is now reportedly in Venezuela. But instead of addressing alarming problems like these, the Obama Administration is doubling down on its unpopular mission to empty GITMO at all costs. For Americans worried about the safety and security of their families, and for our servicemen and women fighting terrorism abroad who will be endangered by this action, the end of this Administration cannot come soon enough.”
Last month, Rubio, Richard Burr (R-NC), Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and John McCain (R-AZ), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, requested information from Secretary of Defense Ash Carter and Secretary of State John Kerry about the case of missing former Guantanamo Bay detainee Jihad Ahmad Dhiab, a former Al Qaeda weapons smuggler who expressed his desire to return to the Middle East to reengage in terrorist activity.
In April, Rubio co-sponsored two bills regarding GITMO detainees, the Protections Against Terrorist Transfer Act and the Detainee Transfer Transparency Act
