Child and Family Policy

family is the lifeblood of our great nation

Senator Rubio knows that family is the fundamental building block of society and the lifeblood of our great nation. That is why he is committed to passing pro-family legislation that protects children and empowers parents to successfully raise the next generation. He believes American families deserve the best, and he will keep fighting on their behalf for as long as he can.

landmark policy change

In 2017, Senator Rubio worked with Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) and Ivanka Trump to double the federal child tax credit for working families. As the New York Times reported, “it was a natural extension of the promise he believes the Republican Party had made, and was in danger of abandoning, to look out for the little guy.” Rubio faced opposition from members of his own party before achieving success, but it was worth it to accomplish this landmark policy change. 2018 tax return data confirmed that the child tax credit expansion benefited millions of Americans in every tax bracket, except those at the very top.

protect life and empower mothers

In 2018, before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Rubio announced a pro-family policy framework to protect life and empower mothers in post-Roe America. He earned praise for “think[ing] creatively about where the state can intervene to better support pregnant women and families, and where it can unleash the power of the market to reduce the cost of living for parents.” Key provisions of Rubio’s framework include the option to “pull forward” Social Security benefits for paid parental leave and the Lifting Local Communities Act, which would protect faith-based nonprofits from discrimination in the distribution of federal funding.

the best

More recently, Rubio published a scholarly article in the Harvard Law Journal of Legislation, in which he exposed how federal policies, namely marriage penalties in the tax code and discrimination against two-parent, single-income households in the child benefit system, undermine the common good. Rubio’s research and innovative ideas continue to draw attention from journalists, policy experts, and cultural influencers alike.
