Ahead Of Senate Vote, Rubio Urges Colleagues To Support VA Reform Bill

Jun 5, 2017 | Press Releases

Washington, D.C. – Ahead of the Senate vote on the VA Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) highlighted the need for VA reform, and urged his colleagues to vote in favor of the legislation.

A downloadable broadcast quality version is available for TV stations here. An audio file is available here. A transcript of Rubio’s remarks is below.

VIDEO: Rubio urges Senate colleagues to vote in favor of VA reform bill

RUBIO: The VA Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act is headed to the Senate floor on Tuesday, and I’m truly hopeful my Senate colleagues are going to vote in favor of this.

This would reform the VA by allowing the secretary to dismiss bad employees and ensure appropriate due process protections for whistleblowers. In the last few weeks, major veterans organizations have been throwing their support behind this commonsense reform, and it’s been endorsed by the VA Secretary.

So, I hope the Senate is going to take this up and pass it without delay so that the secretary has the tools that he needs to hold bad actors accountable and also to protect whistleblowers from the threat of retaliation. These changes are crucial to ensure that there’s accountability at the VA so that it can deliver for our veterans. And so, I ask you to please lend your voice to support this bill and hopefully it will pass here this week.
