Ahead of World Press Freedom Day, Rubio, Menendez Lead Resolution Recognizing Importance of Press Freedom
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), and Bob Menendez (D-NJ) today introduced a resolution highlighting the importance of press freedom and commending journalists around the world for their role in defending democratic activity. The bipartisan resolution recognizes the dangers that reporters face and reaffirms freedom of the press as a priority for the U.S. government under the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.
In 1993, the United Nations proclaimed World Press Freedom Day, which honors the principle of press freedom and pays tribute to journalists around the world who have lost their lives while pursuing stories.
The resolution is cosponsored by Senators Bob Casey (D-PA), Jerry Moran (R-KS), Ed Markey (D-MA), John Cornyn (R-TX), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Cory Gardner (R-CO), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Chris Coons (D-DE), and Dick Durbin (D-IL).
