Rubio: My promise to Puerto Rico

El Nuevo Día
March 20 marks six months since Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico. While recovery efforts continue, Puerto Ricans are still recuperating from one of the deadliest and most tragic natural disasters in their history. While Puerto Rico does not have representation in the U.S. Senate, it shares a strong bond with my home state of Florida. For the island, and for the many Puerto Ricans who also call Florida home, I am committed to Puerto Rico’s permanent recovery.
Today, I am showing this commitment by sending a letter to President Trump reiterating the need for continued federal support for Puerto Rico. Six months after this storm, the federal government must make its focus the long-term stability of Puerto Ricans displaced by the storm. Doing so would be the next step in fulfilling the promises of protection and recovery we made to our fellow citizens in Puerto Rico. We have made progress, but much work remains.
Even before the storm hit the shores of Yabucoa, I began work to help those about to be affected by Maria. As the storm approached, I urged President Trump’s administration to closely monitor the situation to ensure federal resources would quickly be made available to Puerto Rican officials. As Maria left the island, we secured first reports and began to learn the gravity of the situation caused by this monstrous hurricane. Five days after Maria first hit, I toured the island and saw firsthand the complete devastation left in its wake.
