Rubio Bill To Prohibit Civil Aviation At Homestead Air Reserve Base To Become Law

Dec 12, 2022 | Comunicados de Prensa

Last month, the Miami-Dade County Commission voted to override Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s veto of a bill to expand the urban development boundary in southern Miami Dade County. The expansion would have potentially impacted military readiness and may impede efforts to conserve and restore critical habitat near Homestead Air Reserve Base (HARB) and Biscayne Bay.

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) has been an outspoken opponent of the UDB expansion. In July, he introduced the Protecting Critical Ecosystems and Military Readiness in Florida to prohibit civil aviation operations at Homestead Air Reserve Base (HARB) in Homestead, Florida. A modified version of Rubio’s bill passed the House as part of the annual defense bill, which the Senate is expected to take up next week.

  • “The Miami-Dade County Commission should have never caved to corporate special interests at the expense of our military readiness. Thankfully, Congress stepped in to safeguard our military readiness and remove the incentive to develop land near HARB. I’m grateful to my colleagues for their support, and I look forward to sending it to the president’s desk. ” – Senator Rubio
