Red Sea inaction proves China is not a “responsible stakeholder”

…Beijing has no interest in sharing governance responsibilities or addressing global issues…. Just look at what is happening in the Red Sea….
Here, the Houthis, an Islamic militant movement based in Yemen, are attacking peaceful vessels in transit with weapons made and supplied by Iran…. Naval vessels from the U.S., the U.K. and a few other nations have stepped up to respond. But not Chinese ships.
The Chinese navy has had a base at the mouth of the Red Sea in Djibouti, across from Yemen, since 2017. One of its ostensible functions is to fight piracy but the outpost has ignored countless pleas for help from beleaguered ships.
Protecting shipping from terrorism and piracy is a baseline function in the responsible use of international power. Beijing knows this, which is why it has made a show of using diplomacy to ask Iran to rein in the Houthis. But Beijing has no interest in exerting real pressure on Tehran, because the Houthis have given Chinese vessels free passage….
[I]t belies China’s soaring rhetoric. Could a country that works side by side with Iran, the world’s greatest state sponsor of terrorism, as well as Putin’s Russia, ever be trusted to uphold international peace and prosperity?
Of course not. Beijing pursues no interests beyond its own, and unless you are an authoritarian dictatorship or aligned with a terrorist organization, those interests are unlikely to be in your favor….
