Rubio, Manchin: U.S. Must Defend Israel At The United Nations
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) introduced a Senate resolution today expressing opposition to actions by the Palestinian Authority to try to litigate the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the United Nations (U.N.), rather than engaging in direct, bilateral negotiations. The concurrent resolution urges the Obama Administration to continue exercising its veto power in the U.N. Security Council on any resolution regarding the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
“I condemn the disingenuous actions by the Palestinian Authority leadership to seek statehood through the U.N. and bypass direct talks with Israel,” said Rubio. “This is just the latest sign that Israel currently lacks a true partner for peace. These attempts by the Palestinians will only push the two parties further apart. It is the duty of the United States to stand with Israel and continue to veto any U.N. resolution that inserts the United Nations into the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.”
This resolution states that:
- A durable resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process can only come through direct, bilateral negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians;
- The United Nations cannot be a truly neutral arbiter of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; and
- The United States Government should continue to uphold its practice of vetoing any United Nations Security Council resolution that inserts the Council into the peace process, unilaterally recognizes a Palestinian state, makes declarations concerning Israeli controlled territories, or dictates terms and a timeline for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
On April 15th, U.S. Reps. Doug Lamborn (R-CO-05) and Gwen Graham (D-FL-02) introduced a companion resolution in the House.
