On Sunday, the people of Mexico democratically elected the first female president in the history of their country. 

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued a statement congratulating the people of Mexico for participating in the largest elections in their nation’s history.

• “The Mexican people democratically elected Claudia Sheinbaum as their future president. While the U.S. continues to face an unprecedented fentanyl and illegal migration crisis, it is my hope President-elect Sheinbaum stands up to confront these security and democracy challenges. The U.S. must also be prepared to face continued and significant challenges in the future of the U.S.-Mexico relations with the growth of transnational crime, corruption, and narcoterrorism. 

• “I encourage Sheinbaum, as the first Jewish President of Mexico, to stand in support of our Israeli allies following Hamas’ unjustified terrorist attack and condemn those leaders, both in our region and worldwide, who sever ties with the Jewish State of Israel.”
