Rubio: “I think two things have to happen. The first is, yes, we need to go ahead and continue to hit their nerve center particularly in Mosul and in Raqqa, which is where ISIS is able to inspire people to conduct these sorts of attacks and coordinate some of it. They have a pretty defused organization, in essence, they don’t actually necessarily have to have people come to Raqqa. They are able to communicate and send people around to inspire these attacks. But defeating ISIS and continuing to rob them of territories, that’s a key part of it.
“The other I think that is really important is we need a closer and better relationship with the Turks in terms of intelligence sharing and the like. They are an ally, they are a NATO ally, but I have expressed in the past some concern that the Turks were not taking their ISIS threat as seriously as they should, primarily because they didn’t want to broadcast to the world that they had an ISIS problem. They didn’t want tourists not to come and people afraid to travel there. Well my argument back has always been it’s going to happen and you won’t be able to cover it up then.
“So I hope we can improve our intelligence sharing with the Turks and military cooperation. And by the way, the presence of air strikes from the air base in Turkey, which they did allow us to do and which we thanked them for, is perhaps the main reason why ISIS has chosen to ramp up its focus on Turkey right now. So look, they are a good NATO ally in that regard, but I think there is more that can happen if we can share and work more closely with Turkey, along with other NATO allies working closer with them as well.”
