PHOTOS: In Response to Recent Violence, Rubio Visits Liberty Square Public Housing
Miami, FL – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, Miami-Dade Public Housing Authority Director Michael Liu and local city officials today visited public housing complexes in Liberty City to learn how the community is responding to recent violence and assess ways the federal government can support efforts to ensure safety of the residents.
Yesterday, Rubio called for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to quickly approve requests for housing vouchers for eligible tenants seeking to leave the community and requested the Senate Small Business Committee conduct a field hearing in the community to discuss ways small businesses can help vitalize the community.
“Today I heard firsthand from a community that needs our immediate attention following the tragic murder of a four-year-old child playing in her front yard,” said Rubio. “This tragedy is symptomatic of the violence that has wracked Liberty City for far too long. I believe we can make a real difference by listening to the residents and taking action, which is why I have asked Secretary Carson to quickly approve applications for residents who seek to move from the community and I have requested a field hearing here to discuss ways small businesses can reduce crime and provide economic opportunity to residents. Finally, I am working on legislation to ensure communities like Liberty Square are held to higher safety standards. Liberty City families deserve safe and sanitary living conditions and I intend to work in Congress to ensure all public housing facilities provide that.”
