Following Rubio’s Efforts, Florida Airports Receive $30 Million in Reimbursements

May 10, 2018 | Comunicados de Prensa

Washington, D.C.— U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released a statement today after the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) announced $30 million in reimbursements for Jacksonville International Airport ($3,755,283), Orlando International Airport ($6,424,974), Southwest Florida International Airport ($4,061,698), Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport ($103,545), and Tampa International Airport ($15,912,581) for purchased Explosives Detection Systems.

As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Rubio successfully secured funding to start the reimbursement process for this Florida priority in the 2018 omnibus. The airports have waited nearly two decades to be reimbursed for post-9/11 Explosives Detection Systems (EDS) installation costs.

“This money is long overdue for Florida airports that have waited nearly two decades to be reimbursed for these security investments. Florida hosts millions of visitors every year, and we must ensure that our airports have the resources necessary to uphold the highest safety standards. I will continue to fight for Florida aviation to ensure they are fully reimbursed for these important investments.”
