Rubio Applauds FCC Designation of Huawei and ZTE as National Security Threats
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) applauded the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) action to protect U.S. communications networks from security risks by designating Huawei and ZTE as national security threats. In January, Rubio introduced bipartisan legislation to encourage and support U.S. innovation in the race for 5G by providing over $1 billion to invest in Western-based alternatives to Chinese equipment providers Huawei and ZTE, malign state-directed telecommunications companies that pose a clear and growing threat to the economic and national security of the U.S. and our allies.
“It is beyond dispute that Huawei and ZTE pose a serious national and economic security risk to America, including our 5G and telecommunications networks,” Rubio said. “For far too long, we have allowed these companies, which are beholden to the Chinese Communist Party, to exploit our economic and legal systems. I applaud the FCC and the Trump Administration for this designation. We must continue to work with our partners and allies to ensure the integrity of robust and reliable alternatives as we deny funding and access to Huawei, ZTE and their subsidiaries.”
Specifically, the FCC’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau formally designated Huawei and ZTE, as well as their parents, affiliates, and subsidiaries—as covered companies for purposes of the agency’s November 2019 ban on the use of universal service support to purchase equipment or services from companies posing a national security threat. As a result of today’s action, money from the FCC’s $8.3 billion a year Universal Service Fund may no longer be used to purchase, obtain, maintain, improve, modify, or otherwise support any equipment or services produced or provided by these suppliers.
