Rubio, Inhofe, Gardner, Cornyn Urge President Trump to Send Cabinet-Level Official to Opening of American Institute in Taiwan Compound
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Cory Gardner (R-CO), and John Cornyn (R-TX) today urged President Trump to send a Cabinet-level official to the opening of the American Institute in Taiwan’s (AIT) new compound on June 12th. In March, President Trump signed Rubio’s Taiwan Travel Act into law. The legislation encourages visits between U.S. and Taiwanese officials at all levels.
El full text of the letter is below:
Dear Mr. President,
We thank you for signing the Taiwan Travel Act into law on March 16, 2018. This important law encourages high-level officials, including Cabinet-level national security officials, general officers, and other executive branch officials, to travel to Taiwan. In order to fully implement the Taiwan Travel Act, we urge you to send a Cabinet-level official to the opening of the American Institute in Taiwan’s (AIT) new compound on June 12, 2018.
Taiwan is not only an important economic and security partner, but also a strong ally of the United States. It is everything we want for the Indo-Pacific region, a vibrant democracy with a prosperous free-market economy. AIT’s new office will be more than just a building. It will serve as a tangible symbol of the enduring friendship between Washington, D.C. and Taipei, a relationship that you strongly reaffirmed in the 2017 National Security Strategy.
We believe this is an important moment for your administration to send a Cabinet-level official to Taipei as Beijing increases its pressure on Taiwan both at home and abroad. This will demonstrate our unwavering commitment to one of our strongest democratic partners in the region.
Atentamente,
