Rubio to IRS: Extend Tax Filing Relief to Florida’s Hurricane Victims
Miami, FL – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today urged the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to coordinate with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and allow victims of Hurricane Matthew in Florida until March 15, 2017, to file certain individual and business tax returns and make certain payments. In a letter to IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, Rubio noted that the agency has already provided this relief to victims of Hurricane Matthew in North Carolina, and asks for the same relief be extended to the people of Florida.
El texto de la carta en inglés está full text of Rubio’s letter is below:
October 13, 2016
The Honorable John Koskinen
Commissioner
Internal Revenue Service
1111 Constitution Avenue NW
Washington, D.C. 20224
Dear Commissioner Koskinen:
I urge the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to immediately coordinate with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and provide Florida victims of Hurricane Matthew until March 15, 2017, to file certain individual and business tax returns and make certain tax payments. The IRS has already announced it is providing this relief to North Carolina residents, and I urge you to immediately expand this assistance to the people of Florida as well.
As Hurricane Matthew approached the southeastern United States last week, I urged President Obama to conduct an immediate and thorough review of all existing federal regulations that can be relaxed in order to facilitate hurricane relief efforts. During crises like this, I know how critically important it is for individuals, businesses, local governments and others not to be hindered in their hurricane response efforts by excessive and overly burdensome regulations that exacerbate problems. This is one such area where the IRS can provide relief.
Because Hurricane Matthew resulted in the closing of many Florida businesses for several days, including accounting firms that assist companies of all sizes with their payroll and tax issues, it’s imperative that the people of Florida receive the same tax return filing relief that the IRS has already provided to the people of North Carolina.
As one Floridian affected by the hurricane told us, “Time is of the essence.” I urge you to extend this relief immediately.
Atentamente,
Marco Rubio
U.S. Senator
CC: The Honorable William Craig Fugate
