Rubio Applauds Overwhelming Supreme Court Decision Defending Religious Liberty

Jun 20, 2019 | Comunicados de Prensa

Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) applauded the United States Supreme Court’s 7–2 decision in American Legion v. American Humanist Association upholding that the 40-foot Peace Cross, a World War I memorial that has stood on public land in Bladensburg, MD for nearly 100 years, does not violate the First Amendment. On July 27, 2018, Rubio, along with 109 of his colleagues in Congress, submitted an amicus brief expressing his support of the Peace Cross.

“I applaud today’s overwhelming decision in favor of religious freedom. The Bladensburg Peace Cross has stood for nearly 100 years as a memorial honoring World War I veterans from the area who made the ultimate sacrifice defending our nation. Today’s ruling sends a strong message to radical activists who wish to undermine the religious tradition of our nation through misguided attempts to tear down memorials and monuments across our country that incorporate religious symbols.”
