Were you one of the hundreds of millions of people who woke up a couple of Sundays ago feeling cheated out of an hour of sleep? Join the club.

Thankfully, there’s a solution. Our Sunshine Protection Act of 2021 would extend Daylight Saving Time (DST) permanently, so Americans can enjoy having sunlight during their most productive hours of the day and never have to worry about changing their clocks again. It’s a bipartisan effort, and support is only growing in Congress and around the country.
…
Besides saying goodbye to the inconvenience of resetting all the clocks in your house, year-round DST would also offer notable public health benefits. Spending more standard work hours in sunlight would likely reduce rates of seasonal depression, while not having to juggle time changes could reduce heart problems y risk of stroke. Americans tend to exercise more frequently during DST, as well. Similarly, researchers have suggested that we’d experience fewer car accidents y evening robberies, thanks to a more regular schedule and the extra hour of sun later in the day.
There’s reason to believe that permanent DST would see economic pay-offs, too. Studies have shown reduced economic activity in standard time. Making DST permanent could offset this, as well as lead to greater energy savings across the country. Furthermore, the notion that DST was implemented for farming or agriculture is just not true.
…
States across our country are starting to catch on. Fifteen of them — from Washington to Florida, and California to Maine — have now passed legislation or resolutions to make DST year-round. But they’re powerless to enact the overwhelming will of the people until they get federal approval.
That’s where Congress comes in. Our Sunshine Protection Act already has 12 cosponsors in the Senate and, as dozens of states around the country consider adopting their own measures to enact permanent DST, it’s clear that momentum is growing. To any Americans who think back to Sunday morning, March 14, and wonder why we inflict such an inconvenience on ourselves, we encourage you to join us as we work to #LockTheClock.
