Newly Sponsored Legislation
Senator Rubio is an original co-sponsor of S.RES.525, a resolution honoring the life and legacy of Cuban dissident Oswaldo Payá Sardinas, who was killed in a car accident on July 22. Payá lived a life of outstanding courage, serving as one of the most vocal and steadfast leaders of the men and women demanding freedom from the oppressive Castro regime. One of the ways he challenged the legitimacy of the Cuban government was by creating the Varela Project. The project took advantage of a loophole in the Revolution’s Constitution by collecting petitions calling for democratic liberalization of Cuban society. The heavy fist of the Castro regime came down hard on Payá and the other leading signatories, proving not only the oppressive nature of Castro’s government, but also the potency of Payá’s courageous actions. Senator Rubio believes that the life and legacy of Oswaldo Payá Sardinas deserves to be honored by all those who value freedom, and he is certain that those whose lives were touched by this great man will never forget his service to their cause.
Senator Rubio is an original co-sponsor of S.CON.RES.53, a concurrent resolution condemning the atrocities of the Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting and honoring those who were injured or killed. Senator Rubio is deeply saddened by the cowardly crimes that occurred in Aurora and by the resulting loss of life. That men, women and even a young child had their lives taken by a deranged gunman is an unspeakable tragedy. Senator Rubio hopes the people of Aurora feel the love and prayers of our nation as they grieve the loss of their friends, family and neighbors. This resolution is a small way to send the nation’s best wishes to those who have been touched by this tragedy.
Senator Rubio is a co-sponsor of S.1935, officially titled the March of Dimes Commemorative Coin Act of 2011. This is a bill to require the Secretary of the Treasury to mint coins in recognition and celebration of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the March of Dimes Foundation. The March of Dimes Foundation is a nonprofit organization, originally founded by President Franklin Roosevelt, which aims to improve the health of mothers and babies. It is impossible to quantify the number of lives that have been strengthened and even saved by this remarkable organization since its founding. Senator Rubio believes that a commemorative coin will be an excellent way for the American people to honor and celebrate the work done by the March of Dimes and by those generous Americans whose donations keep it running.
