Rubio Secures $100 Million to Implement Stop School Violence Act
Washington, D.C. – Today, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved the fiscal year 2019 (FY19) Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies (CJS) Appropriations bill, which includes $100 million to implement the Students, Teachers, and Officers Preventing (STOP) School Violence Act. The legislation authorizes Department of Justice grants to states and localities to help our schools implement proven, evidence-based programs and technologies that identify and stop school violence before it happens. Senator Rubio co-introduced and pushed for the STOP School Violence Act, which was passed into law in March, and secured the $100 million in funding in the FY19 CJS bill.
“The Parkland shooter fell through the cracks of a massive systematic failure. We must learn from these mistakes and ensure that law enforcement and schools have and utilize the tools needed to prevent such tragedies from ever happening again,” said Rubio. “As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, pushing for funding to make our schools safer is a top priority for me, and the money to implement the STOP School Violence Act, which is now law, is one step closer to the states.”
Following the Parkland tragedy, Rubio outlined a multipronged plan to address gun violence following the Parkland tragedy.
