Rubio: Ortega’s ‘Reelection’ Does Not Reflect Will of Nicaraguan People
Miami, FL – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued the following statement today regarding the presidential election in Nicaragua:
“I don’t believe the results of Nicaragua’s presidential election accurately reflect the will of the Nicaraguan people. For years, Daniel Ortega has been systematically circumventing Nicaragua’s constitution, legislature and institutions. These alarming and unlawful actions indicate that the Ortega government is on a path toward dynastic control with the potential to become a dictatorship.
“Daniel Ortega has no regard for human rights, specifically the right to free speech and free elections, and the Nicaraguan people have suffered from this oppression. Under Ortega’s rule, there has been widespread corruption among institutions that are fundamental for the rule of law, including law enforcement agencies and the Supreme Court.
“Daniel Ortega and his regime hate when I and others speak out in defense of the Nicaraguan people’s freedom, and I wear it as a badge of honor that I’ve been banned from traveling to that country for speaking the truth.
“I support the Nicaraguan people’s struggle to exercise their God-given rights. I believe the U.S. should condition our assistance to Nicaragua and use it as leverage to secure progress in restoring democratic order and stop this slide towards totalitarianism. As Americans who value freedom and human dignity, we cannot allow the people of Nicaragua to be torn apart by oppressive and corrupt leaders like Daniel Ortega.”
