Rubio, Lankford, Colleagues Introduce Resolution Honoring the Anniversary of the USS Forrestal Fire
The USS Forrestal fire was the worst loss of life on a U.S. Navy ship since World War II. While stationed off the coast of North Vietnam during the Vietnam War, a deadly fire started on the ship due to an accidental rocket launch. After a day of work to contain the fire, 134 sailors—including 10 Floridians—lost their lives, with 161 injured.
U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and James Lankford (R-OK) introduced a bipartisan resolution commemorating the anniversary of this tragic accident.
- “The Senate commemorates the 55th anniversary of the fire onboard the USS Forrestal[,]…recognizes the sailors and marines who gave their lives for ship and shipmates while fighting the devastating fire and commemorates the efforts of the sailors and marines who survived the fire…. [T]he selfless sacrifice of the sailors and marines who came to the rescue of fellow shipmates and the USS Forrestal represent, and are consistent with, the highest traditions of the Navy.”
