HUD Officials Visit Slum-like Properties After Rubio Urges Oversight

Jan 8, 2024 | Comunicados de Prensa

After numerous requests and inquiries, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) sent officials to inspect Glorieta Gardens in Opa-locka, Florida. Rubio has consistently raised reports of deplorable living conditions at the Section 8 housing property.

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released a statement following the visit.

  • “For years, the residents at Glorieta Gardens have endured inhumane living conditions, including mold, pests, rodents, sewage, and flooding. I have been raising concerns since 2018, and Congresswoman Wilson and I will continue to advocate for the residents of Glorieta Gardens. I hope HUD’s site visit leads to strong accountability measures so the residents receive the safe, healthy living standards they are guaranteed under the law.” – senador Rubio

Retrospectiva... Since 2018, Rubio has been raising concerns over the unsafe and unsanitary conditions at Glorieta Gardens. He has asked HUD to conduct an audit of the property owner and management to ensure federal tax benefits were used as intended in the rehabilitation of the property.

Rubio remained engaged with HUD for years, urging the agency to respond to deteriorating conditions at the property. Rubio also urged corrective action after a botched relocation and renovation effort in fall 2023, in which management gave nearly 50 residents only 24 hours’ notice to vacate their apartments.
