Media Advisory: At Hearing, Rubio To Highlight Human Trafficking As A Priority Human Rights Issue
Washington, D.C. – On Wednesday, November 2, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio and other members of the U.S. Helsinki Commission will be holding a hearing focused on human trafficking and its links to transnational organized crime. The hearing comes as S. 1301, The Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2011, makes its way through Congress.
“We must never lose sight of our duty to defend human rights, particularly for people exploited by the human trafficking trade,” said Rubio. “Too many people are being abused in this modern day slavery. This is an issue that both parties can work together on to raise awareness and reauthorize a law that will help stop this horrendous crime.”

The Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the U.S. Helsinki Commission, is an independent agency of the Federal Government charged with monitoring compliance with the Helsinki Accords and advancing comprehensive security through promotion of human rights, democracy, and economic, environmental and military cooperation in 56 countries. The Commission consists of nine members from the U.S. Senate, nine from the House of Representatives, and one member each from the Departments of State, Defense, and Commerce.
