MEDIA ADVISORY: Rubio To Discuss Crisis In Venezuela During Senate Foreign Relations Committee Hearing
Washington, D.C. – Tomorrow, May 8, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, will discuss the ongoing political crisis in Venezuela and the Maduro regime’s violent repression of peaceful demonstrations during the hearing entitled, “Assessing Venezuela’s Political Crisis: Human Rights Violations and Beyond.”
Rubio is an original sponsor of the Venezuela Defense of Human Rights and Civil Society Act of 2014, which authorizes sanctions on people involved in serious human rights violations against peaceful demonstrators in Venezuela.
Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Roberta Jacobson and Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Tomasz P. Malinowski will testify on the first panel. The second panel will consist of Moises Naím, a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; Jose Miguel Vivanco, director of Human Rights Watch’s Americas division; and Patrick Duddy, a former U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela.
