ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND ON RUBIO’S PENSACOLA VISIT
In early 2015, Judge Rodgers penned a letter to the General Services Administration (GSA), which oversees government properties, expressing concern over the issue of mold in the federal courthouse. Judge Rodgers also brought this matter to the attention of Rubio’s Pensacola office (which was located in the courthouse).
Shortly thereafter, Rubio representatives met with the GSA. The GSA indicated that they were working on repairs but did not believe all offices needed to relocate out of the courthouse. Nevertheless, Judge Rodgers’ office had already relocated due to employees suffering from health ailments. As reported by the Pensacola News Journal, Rubio and Congressman Jeff Miller also wrote a February 2015 letter to the GSA’s acting Administrator inquiring on the agency’s progress in addressing the mold outbreak. Upon further inquiries, the GSA was reluctant to give Rubio’s office answers but asserted that the courthouse was safe and the few areas contaminated were quarantined.
At the request of Judge Rodgers, a third party was contracted for an additional inspection and found that there were discrepancies with the GSA findings.
After touring the courthouse, Commissioner Norman Dong from the GSA’s Public Buildings Service ordered all offices relocated until repairs were made. Such repairs, however, have yet to be seen. Tomorrow, Rubio will discuss with Judge Rodgers on how to push for repairs and address these unacceptable delays and conditions.
