NDAA Passes Senate with Rubio Amendments on Veterans’ Education, Cyber Training, Hurricane Damage
Today the U.S. Senate passed the Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which included three amendments offered by U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL).
“Hurricane Irma has inflicted significant damage to Florida’s communities and military installations alike,” said Rubio. “My bipartisan amendment will provide Congress with the information it needs to ensure our national security assets and capabilities are fully repaired in the wake of these storms. Our military bases and assets in Florida are a key part of protecting America, so this measure is critical not only for our state, but also our nation.
“Another provision I offered will help us ensure our cyber force is properly equipped and trained for this emerging field of warfare,” continued Rubio. “Cyber-related training and operations at Naval Air Station Pensacola Corry Station helps keep our country safe, and we must make sure this and other military training installations have adequate infrastructure to keep up with the increased threat.”
Amendment 917 would require the secretary of defense to submit to Congress a report detailing the damage sustained by Department of Defense (DOD) assets and installations due to hurricanes in 2017. Additionally, the legislation requires DOD to submit a funding request for damage found by the assessment.
Amendment 919 would require the secretary of defense to submit to Congress a report detailing training infrastructure for cyber forces. DOD would identify shortcomings in cyber training infrastructure, offer potential commercial applications to address such deficiencies, and include future projections of the overall cyber workforce growth.
Amendment 927 would require the secretary of defense, in consultation with the secretaries of the VA, Education, and Labor Departments, to submit a report to Congress detailing the transfer of skills into college credit or technical certifications for servicemembers leaving the military.
