PHOTO RELEASE: Rubio Meets With Top Officials From The Kurdistan Regional Government

Sep 18, 2014 | Comunicados de Prensa

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today met with Dr. Fuad M. Hussein – Chief of Staff to Masoud Barzani, the President of the Region of Kurdistan of Iraq – as well as Minister Falah Mustafa Bakir, the head of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Department of Foreign Relations.

Hussein and Barzani expressed their gratitude for U.S. air operations in support of Kurdish forces, and updated Rubio on challenges facing the region. They also briefed Rubio on Kurdistan’s ongoing fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group, and stressed the importance of continued U.S. support for Iraq and Kurdistan.

Photos of Rubio and Hussein are available below and can be credited to Rubio’s office. They can be viewed in higher quality here.

“The Kurds have been some of America’s closest friends and allies in the Middle East,” said Rubio. “Even as we work to promote an inclusive government in Baghdad that represents the interests of all Iraqis, we should provide lethal and humanitarian assistance directly to our friends in Kurdistan, who are currently on the front lines of the fight against ISIL. We should also find ways to strengthen our relationship with the Kurdish people.”
